A performance evaluation also known as a performance appraisal or performance review is a method by which the job performance of an employee is documented and evaluated. A performance evaluation, performance appraisal and performance review are all constructive processes to acknowledge the performance of a non-probationary career employee. An employee's evaluation shall be sufficiently specific to inform and guide the employee in the performance of his/her duties. The way it works is a manager examines and evaluates an employee's work behavior by comparing it with preset standards. Then the manager documents the results of the comparison, and then uses the results to provide feedback to the employee to show where improvements are needed and why. Performance evaluations, performance appraisals and performance reviews are employed to determine who needs what training, and who will be promoted, demoted, retained, or fired.
