When living at home with your parents sometimes you might get a little spoiled and get used to the idea of your parents taking care of you in every way from financially to making sure that when you get home from work or school your meals are prepared and your laundry is done. When I lived at home after college my parents made sure that even though I lived at home and worked that I saved as much as possible for the future. Saving was a very important way of living for my parents so they made sure that they passed it on to me. Since I started saving while I lived at home with my parents it became apart of my everyday routine when I moved out of my parents place and into the city (NYC). So I wanted to discuss some smart money tips that you should know when you move out of your parents place and are living on your own. The most important thing you need to know is how to budget and manage your money. When I planned on moving out of my parents I had a budget in mind of how much I wanted to and could afford to spend on an apartment. Then what I did and still do when I moved into my apartment in the city for the first time is I always make sure to pay myself first--meaning I always make sure to save a certain percentage of my paycheck when I get paid. Then I also do a breakdown of my expenses from the cost of my rent, to how much I spend in utilities (depending on the season the utility cost would fluctuate meaning for example in the summer I'd use the AC more often which would increase my utility bill by $5-$10 or more), to how much I spent on groceries, to credit card bills. Once I came up with the amount for each expense I would total them all together and then I knew that I needed to put that amount aside every month and not touch it because it was for bills and bills only. All of these techniques made it easy for me to budget and manage my money all the time.
